Lakeside Acquisitions is pleased to announce the sale of PHX LLC and its affiliates (together, “Phoenix Recycling”) to Republic Services (“Republic”, NYSE: RSG), which closed on June 30th, 2026. Phoenix Recycling, owned by Mark Thompson and Paul Bendt, operates the only privately owned MRF and transfer station in the five-county southwest Colorado region, with 25+ years of growth and a strong reputation for service. Republic plans to integrate Phoenix Recycling into its existing hauling and collection business in the greater La Plata County region. With vast experience operating assets of this type, Republic is the best long-term partner to continue the legacy of Phoenix Recycling.
Phoenix Recycling engaged Lakeside Acquisitions to lead and execute the complete transaction process, with Lakeside serving as its exclusive M&A advisor. Lakeside’s niche focus and expertise in the waste and recycling industry helped provide invaluable insights and facilitate negotiations on behalf of Phoenix Recycling to ensure a successful outcome. The specific financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
My experience with Lakeside exceeded my high expectations. They have assembled an excellent team that makes a challenging process manageable, and they deliver great results. Period.
Matt H took the time to really understand my business, at a very deep level. He dissected my financial statements and told the story of my business in a way that appealed to larger players in the industry, setting the acquisition up for success and managing complicated financial questions throughout. Joe took the lead with contract negotiations and blasted through a never-ending deluge of legal issues, deadlines, modifications, and a hundred other deal-threatening problems that never stopped until the deal finally closed. At every step, Joe worked with the dedication of someone selling his own business, negotiating on my behalf even when it had no impact on Lakeside. Throughout the process, Matt B and Kelsey monitored, strategized, supported, and kept everything on track and operating smoothly.
I was consistently impressed with the dedication everyone showed. Lakeside never backed away from an issue that was “outside of the scope” or needlessly acquiesced to issues that didn’t benefit them financially. They worked hard on my behalf regardless of how it impacted them, and they were a true partner from start to finish.
For any business owner considering hiring Lakeside Acquisitions, you could certainly market and sell your business without them, but you’ll work harder and earn less. The value they delivered to me far exceeded the fees they charged, and if I had to do it all over again, I would hire them sooner.
From its 29-acre site just outside Durango, Phoenix provides residential MSW and recycling collection, C&D roll-off hauling and processing, secure document destruction, and biomass and organics management. Anchored by a 15,000 sq ft material recovery facility (MRF)/transfer station, Phoenix Recycling was the first waste and recycling operator to offer recycling services to homeowners and businesses in the southwest Colorado region. Over more than two decades, the company has grown from a small recycling service into an integrated regional platform, today serving a diverse mix of household, commercial and governmental accounts.
